The goal of our new project "The Conchological Albums - Terrestrial Molluscs" is to figure a major part of the currently known world's biodiversity of land snails.
For more than 30 years Abbott's "Compendium of Landshells" was the only "comprehensive" guide for the world's biodiversity of land snails, summarized in 2.000 figures on 250 pages.
This series is not intended to be a revision of the respective gastropod families, but to figure their species and morphological plasticity. Each of the treated families are presented with a short introduction, systematic overview and this is followed by richly figured plates.
The 31 albums document 19 374 shells, most with 3 views each. They belong to 9 762 different species, 1 049 subspecies and 302 "forms". It merely concerns, apart from a few exceptions, all landsnails ever handled by Conchology, Inc. It is the result documenting several mega collections of landsnails that were made between 1930 and 2020.
What people write about the albums:
Philippe Bouchet
I just received today the first two "Conchological Albums".
They are as fantastic as I expected: beautiful, erudite, professtional.
Bravo Congratulations that extend to the publisher.
Antonio Monteiro
I do like it. I am no longer a collector of land snails(I was one, some thirty years ago...),
but I still enjoy knowing about them. This publication is not a revision, it is an iconography, so lots of excellent
colour plates but no text apart from the captions to the plates.
The final numbers:
In March 2020, the first author started this series as a single author, but then got so much help from Sheila and Philippe they deserved to become co-authors. All together we could finish the series of 31 volumes by late May 2021, a full time job for in the covid-environment at home, for more than 14 months, 7 days a week.
Several co-authors contributed for their respective specialties, adding to the quality of the determinations.
Conchbooks thinks publishing about 5 Volumes per year, but if there is enough enthusiasm and the number of buyers is consistent, then we can speed up the publications.
