In 2013, I created the Worldwide Mollusc Species DataBase (WMSDB) in an attempt to create a complete list of all species of molluscs still living on our planet. Later, while encoding data, I also included fossils into the database.
Being a shell collector I'm aware this is a "quite impossible" task, in addition I'm not an expert on taxonomy. I had some spare time and was able to write some computer programs to investigate the Internet and to process the information found.
Initially, I started this project because I was tired to waste time in trying to decode the shells offered by various vendors over the net. The basic idea was to put all synonyms and homonyms inside a database in such a way the system could tell me the "true shell" represented by each offer. Having been a Geographic Information System consultant in the past I also tried to georeference each shell.
