Remarks:

Goodfriend & Gould, 1996:1895 document an "area effect" between C. excelsior and C. rubicundum. They suggested that C. excelsior was present initially, and C. rubicundum invaded later [as it is not present in the fossil record].  These authors document a transition from excelsior to rubicundum from about 16,640 ybp until 3,040 ybp, the ages of the oldest and youngest intermediate specimens in their sample, and conclude that the "morphometric effects of hybridity endured for at least 13,000 years?"
