This binomen was first used by Maynard (1919b:52) [as S. caprana] together with a reference to a subsequently published figure (Maynard, 1919c: fig. 19) that was labeled "S. capraia M. & C." A colored version of this figure, also labeled S .capraia, appeared in Maynard, 1920c:pl. 17, fig. 3. The spelling caprana is clearly a typographical error and an "incorrect original spelling" [Article 32.5.1, ICZN, 1999:39] that has no separate availability [Article 32.4, ICZN, 1999:39]. The November 6, 1919 usage as caprana is a nomen nudum. The association of a new species group name with an illustration of the taxon being named prior to 1930 makes the name Strophiops capraia Maynard and Clapp in Maynard 1919c: fig. 19 available (Article 12.2.7, ICZN, 1999:17) prior to the intended description of this species (Maynard and Clapp in Maynard, 1921a:131; Plate 28, figs. 7, 8). Due to Maynard's unintended taxonomic act, the binomen Strophiops capraia becomes available on December 31, 1919, but retains the same authorship.
The intended original description follows:
"66. S. capraia.
Smaller, 1.12 by .47; frontal bar low on right; costae 33, wider than interspaces; dull white. with a narrow deep blue band around ultimate whorl. North Goat Key off Fresh Creek. Common. 1620. Plate 28, figs. 7, 8." (Maynard and Clapp in Maynard, 1921a:131).
