"Cerion vulneratum lepidum, new species

     Description. - Shell reaching 31 mm. (1¼ inch) in length, rather thin and light in structure, nearly smooth, highly colored and rimately perforate. Color nearly white (very rare) to a marbled red-brown to purple-brown, usually in the form of very irregular axial streaks. Whorls 10 to 11, slightly convex, the last 4 nearly straight sided, the early whorls forming a convex summit. Spire extended, the convex summit forming an angle of about 55°. Aperture sub­quadrate to subcircular. Outer lip reflected and somewhat thickened. Inner lip nearly straight, thickened and built forward slightly to form a low ridge. This condition exists only in fully adult specimens. Younger adult specimens exhibit only a glaze or an incomplete ridge. Columella short, straight or inclined to the left, occasionally quite markedly. Columellar tooth low and extending back for nearly one-half whorl. Suture slightly indented. Sculpture consisting of very fine axial costae on the first 4 to 5 post embryonic whorls, later whorls nearly smooth or with faint axial growth lines. Nuclear whorls 2 light amber colored, the first one smooth, the second whorl very faintly axially costate.

     Holotype. - Museo Poey no. 12665; Paratypes Museum of Com­parative Zoölogy no. 166619; 178328 from Laguna, Punta de Mulas, Banes, Oriente, Cuba, collected by C. G. Aguayo, W. J. Clench and A. Quiñones.

     Remarks. - This species, though close in its relationships to C. vulneratum Küster appears specifically distinct. It differs by being proportionally narrower and possessing a more acute apex, and being exceedingly ligth in structer.

     C. vulneratum Küster was described from one specimen without locality said to have been found in Pfeiffer's collection. Later on Pfeiffer stated that he did not have any specimen referrably to Küster's species. Afterwards he received from Gundlach some spe­cimens collected near Gibara ( ?), in which he based his redescrip­cription published in Novit. Conch. 3, p. 368, pl. 84, f. 18-23, 1867. On specimen in the Museo Peoy, collected by Aguayo in Vita, Gi­bara, seems to represent the typical vulneratum rather than those collected in Banes.

    This species was discovered by Sr. A. R. Quiñones a few years before the author's trip to Banes." (Clench & Aguayo, 1951:76-77)
