This taxon became available when an illustration (Maynard, 1920b:fig. 59*, pl. 13, fig. 1), captioned S. persuasa M & C.," was published prior to the intended description. The name is thus attributed to Maynard and Clapp in Maynard, 1920. The association of a new species group name with an illustration of the taxon being named prior to 1930 makes the name Strophiops persuasa Maynard and Clapp in Maynard, 1920 available (Article 12.2.7, ICZN, 1999:17) prior to the intended description of this species (Maynard and Clapp in Maynard, 1921a:131, Plate 28, figs. 7, 8). The name next appeared (Maynard, 1920d:112) in a text correction. Due to Maynard's unintended taxonomic act, the binomen Strophiops persuasa became available on April 8, 1920, but retains the same authorship.
