"Cerion catherwoodianum new species          Figs. 5 and 6.

            Shell cylindroid-conic; rimate. Type of 9 ¾ whorls; apical whorls smooth, later whorls heavily costate. The costae parallel the growth lines. Each costa is vertical posteriorly, sloping anteriorly, and they are narrower than their interstices. Thirty-two costae on the last whorl. Suture not deeply impressed and somewhat crenulated by the costae of the whorl below. Spire conoid; last two whorls flat-sided, last ascending at the aperture. Parietal tooth about 1/5 whorl in length, columellar fold weakly demarcated. White, irregularly mottled with brown which occurs indiscriminately on both of the costae and their interstices. Both costae and interstices polished.

            Height 28.6 mm., diam. 13.6 mm., 9 ¾ whorls.   (Type.)

            Height 32.7 mm., diam. 15.2 mm., 10 ¾ whorls. (Paratype.)

            Type collected in palm thicket about 100 yards east of the west shore of Cayo Largo (station 7). The shell was inhabited by a hermit crab when collected, but was, nevertheless, a fresh shell. ANSP 186180.

            Paratype, also a crab shell, collected by Proctor in grass and sedge along the south shore of Cayo Largo (station 15a). ANSP 186181.

            Only two specimens of this species were found.

            This species is quite distinct. no comparable forms are known from the island chain composing the Banco Jardines nor from the mainland coasts surrounding the Golfo de Batabano or Golfo de Cazones.
