The binomen Strophiops cana was first used by Maynard (1920b[April 8]:86, 88) in a discussion of shell repair following severe damage, and referred to subsequently published illustrations
(Maynard, 1920c[July 10]:figs. 69, 76, pl. 15, fig. 1, pl. 17, fig. 5) of damaged specimens of S. cana, as examples of snails surviving crushing predation, noting that color change occasionally accompanied shell repair. The association of a new species group name with an illustration of the taxon being named prior to 1930 makes the name Strophiops cana Maynard and Clapp in Maynard 1920 available (Article 12.2.7, ICZN, 1999:17) on July 10, with the publication of figure 69 captioned S. cana M & C, before the intended description of this species (Maynard and Clapp in Maynard, 1921a [May 2]:137). Prior uses of S. cana Maynard (1920b:86, 88) are nomina nuda.
