There are 764 paralectotypes, including MCZ 76191, MCZ118213 and USNM 419943 (200 specimens).

Remarks:
The name of this taxon is spelled as balaene in the original description, balaena in the plate caption, and balanae in Maynard's [1924?:[4]] sales catalog. The spellings balaene and balaenae are here considered "incorrect original spellings" [Article 32.5.1, ICZN, 1999:39] and thus have no separate availability [Article 32.4, ICZN, 1999:39]. Clench (1957:138) lists this taxon as balaena.
