"S. varia-purpurea new. Intermediate between varia and purpurea. 50 Found from the termination of Bay Street east to the Creek Settlement. Judging from the large quantity of dead shells (some very ancient) scattered about the beach near the Creek Settlement, New Providence was there first invaded by S. varia. A portion of this colony migrated west, forming the species just described, and another passed east and south. From this were derived the series of beautiful species which partly belt the island. All of these species have, in one way or another, found isolation." (Maynard, 1913c:188)
