Remarks:
Following Article 32.5.2.4 (ICZN, 1999:40) the hyphen is removed from varia-thorndikei and the taxon becomes variathorndikei. A label accompanying the lectotype stated  "on an isolated grass plot, now extinct. 1915."  Gould and Woodruff (1986:478) regarded this taxon to be a synonym of  Cerion gubernatorium (Crosse, 1869), although it is unlikely that they had seen specimens.
