  • Prof. Georg Haas (1905-1981) was a pioneer in research in Middle East mollusca. He was born in Vienna, Austria. As the age of 27 (in 1932) he joined the Zoology Department of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He set, from the first, a goal of building a representative zoological collection. While holding a broad interest in all recent and fossil animals, he was mainly concerned with Herpetology, Malacology and Paleontology, but in no particular order. Prof. Haas began to systematically collect Recent mlusca in the then relatively unexplored region of the Middle East. His collections of land, freshwater and marine molluscs form the basis of the extensive Nationam Lommusc Collection at Hebrew University. George Haas muse be considered the founder and patron of the study of molluscs in Israel. With all if his research Dr. Haas described a single endemic Clausid landsnail, Cristataria elonensis (G. Haas, 1951). However, his name has been attached to a number of others moluscs by colleagues who wished to honor him. And now the first issue of a new publication Haasiana "A Newsletter of the Natural History Collections" has appeared (No. 1, March 1995). - Edit
