A semi-precious family with about 400 species, subspecies and forms. Olividae thank their success among collectors to the high brilliance of the shells and to the large degree of variability within one species. Their taxonomy is difficult and the nomenclature chaotic. Because members of the genus Oliva, apart from a few exceptions, all live in shallow water, usually in colonies. Very popular among collectors are large porphyria and rubrolabiata.
