Until recently regarded as a subfamily of the LEPIDOCHITONIDAE. Now a valid family on its own, with the important genera Dinoplax and Chaetopleura.
Dinoplax are large chitons, but there are only 3 different South African species.
The genus Chaetopleura proper lives in the Atlantic as well as in the east Pacific and has many species: the small or average sized species have a sculpture of ribs in the gentral areas of the valves and several other typical characteristics.
