"Cerion laureani, new species

     Description. – Shell extended, reaching 32 mm. (about 1¼  inches) rather solid, nearly smooth and rimately perforated. Color a flat white on the ex­terior of the shell; flesh colored to pale brownish within the aperture. Whorls 11, very slightly convex, the last three nearly equal in width, the remaining earlier whorls forming a moderate convex cone. Spire extended, the conic portion produced at an angle of 50°. Aperture subcircular. Parietal lip ex­panded, thickened. reflected and turned back for about one millimeter. Parietal ridge thickened, straight and but slightly built forward. Columella short and arched, supporting a small tooth, which extends backward for over a full whorl. Parietal tooth rather large but short, hardly extending beyond the inner aperture. Umbilicus rimately formed, the small orifice extending for about one-half whorl. Suture wel defined but only slightly indented. Scupture con­sisting of very fine axial costae on the first four post-embryonic whorls, the remaining later whorls smooth or slightly roughened by the fine, irregular, growth lines. Nuclear whorl a light straw yellow, smooth and then finely costate.

     Types. - Holotype. Museo Poey no. 17232; paratypes, Museo Poey no. 17233, and the Museum of Comparative Zoölogy numbers 129443; 188527; 188528, from Cabo Corrientes, Peninsula de Gua­nahacabibes, south coast of Pinar del Rio, Cuba. Laureano Pe­queño collector. Additional paratypes from Cabo Frances, about 50 kilometers east of Cabo Corrientes and from Punta de la Yana, about 6 kilometers northeast of Cabo Frances.

     Remarks. - This species appears to be fairly close in its relation­ships with the sagraianum complex of north central Cuba. It ap­proximates this species in general shape, differing however, by having a flesh colored aperture and a much more thickened lip.

     It is quite possible that this species may range along the entire coast between Cabo Corrientes and Punta de la Yana, a distance of some 56 kilometers. Our series from both of these extreme points are remarkably uniform in all of their characters.

     This species is named for Dr. Laureano Pe­queño, a collector to to whom we are indebted for much interesting material from many and rather inaccessible localities in Pinar del Rio."  (Clench & Aguayo, 1951:74-75)
