Maynard (1920a:77) used this binomen together with a reference to a subsequently published illustration (Maynard, 1920b:fig. 55, identical illustration colored on pl. 12, fig. 3, both captioned "S. fruticosa M. & C.") as an example of a taxon that has depressions in surface sculpture.  The February 29, 1920 usage is a nomen nudum.  The association of a new species group name with an illustration of the taxon being named prior to 1930 makes the name Strophiops fruticosa Maynard and Clapp in Maynard  1920b: fig. 55, pl. 12, fig. 3 available (Article 12.2.7, ICZN, 1999:17) prior to the intended description of this species (Maynard and Clapp in Maynard, 1920d:125, Pl. 20, figs. 3, 4).  Due to Maynard's unintended taxonomic act, the binomen Strophiops fruticosa becomes available on April 8, 1920, and retains the same authorship.
