UBAGHS, Johan Casimir -10 Oct. 1829 Aken (Germany) - 4 Febr. 1894 Maastricht. Geologist and paleontologist. He studied the stratigraphy of the calcareous layers and collected fossils a.o. in the vicinity of Valkenburg and Maastricht. He already possessed a collection of 650 specimens when he settled at Maastricht in 1866 as a re-presentative of the pharmaceutical company Hahmes. With his collection he founded the Museum Ubaghs (1866-894) at Maastricht, containing collections in the fields of geology, paleontology, archeology, conchyliology and pre-history. He was a collaborator of J. de Bosquet (q.v.). He published ca. 40 articles and he was also a dealer in fossils. His collection is dispersed in all directions, fortunately an important part of it has been bought by the Royal Nat. Hist. Museum at Brussels - Edit
