Dr. Kikutaro Baba died on November 30, 2001, at the age of 96. He was Profeaaor Emeritus at Osaka University of Education (Osaka Kyoiku Daigaku) and Member Emeritus of the Malacological Society of Japan. Dr. Baba was born in Fukuoka Prefecture, Kyushu. After graduating from the Tokyo University of Liberal Arts and Science (Tokyo Bunrika Daigaku, now the University of Tsukuba) in 1932, he went to work at the Amakusa Marine Biological Laboratory of Kyushu Imperial University. He obtained the title of Doctor of Science from Kyoto Imperial University for his physiological studies of Epimenia. Dr. Baba was in Java during and shortly after World War II (1943-1947). After demobilization he first took up the post of Professor at Osaka Normal School (1948), then of Professor at Osaka University of Education (1949-1971). He was decorated with the Third Order of Merit by the Emperor Showa in 1976. Dr, Baba was a world-famous specialist in the Opisthobranchia, He published about 160 academic papers starting in 1928, along with many enlightening articles in Japanse, More than 400 opisthobranchs were introduced to the Japanese fauna through his publications, including many new taxa established by him, His landmark vbook "Opisthobranchia of Sagami Bay" (1949) was based on the collection of the Imperial Household Biological Laboratory. The living animals were artistically depicted in this work in watercolors, in contrast to more modern books. Dr, Baba contributed regularly to the Venus, the journal of the Malacological Society of Japan, staring i volume 2 of 1930. His frequent contributions on Japanese opisthobranchs helped enhance the status f the journal among malacologists both in Japan and abroad. In recognition of his contributions, he was made Membe Emeritus in1988. He was both a precise and painstaking taxonomist and a gentle and sincre person, befriended and admired by malacologists all over the world. Our currnt knowledge of the opisthobranch fauns of Japanese waters has come to a large extebt from Dr. Baba personally or through hi benchmark publications. We miss him very much and are proud to hav had such a great scholar in the Japanese malacological community, Dr. Baba in survived by his wife, Sonoko. TAKASHI OKUTANI - Edit
